Melvelle Equipment Corp has developed a lightweight, battery powered Hand Held Spike Puller machine to remove both Lock and Dog spikes typically found holding steel plates down to timber sleepers. By using 18V Milwaukee Impact wrenches, high torque and therefore force can be developed extracting even heavily rusted spikes. By using lightweight engineering materials, as well as a design that stabilises itself on a variety of rail plates, the operator requires minimal effort to operate and extract spikes.
The innovative design eliminates the need for an operator to use manual spike removal tools (such as a pigs foot bar) while standing on unsteady ballast. This machine is ideally suited to small output gangs on shut-downs and spot work.
